From Brazil to IBC: Júlia Mota Albuquerque’s Artistic Journey
Berlin-based Illustrator and Muralist Júlia Mota Albuquerque, known for her vibrant and impactful public art, will be painting live at the International Broadcast Convention in Amsterdam. Between September 13 and 15, 2024, at booth 5.D39 of the German company nanocosmos, the Brazilian artist will paint while being connected to the world via real-time video streaming to create an interactive experience for everyone at IBC and beyond. When stream joiners and IBC visitors take the opportunity to collaborate with her art via interactive tools added to the stream, various aspects of her artistic journey will continue to evolve, right in the center of the largest broadcast trade show where the streaming industry will meet to discuss next-gen topics.
While the foundation for Júlia’s focus on illustrations and exposure to a diverse international art network was already laid during her time at the international Savannah College of Art and Design, her creative focus today is “public spaces”. Since the pandemic, when Júlia made a virtue of necessity by painting murals as part of street art in Brazil, her work has been dedicated to that.
Transforming Public Spaces
Now, the artist has established herself in the muralist community through her freelance work and submissions for “open calls”, a popular format for assigning mural artists to projects. Her portfolio includes murals in Brazil and across Europe and notable projects such as the 130-square-meter mural at Wetopia in Frankfurt, the 200-square-meter wall for BSR and Stiftung Naturschutz Berlin, and a collaborative mural with Ukrainian artist Danya Kovach in Marseille.
Her work often reflects themes of community, sustainability, artistic collaboration, and diversity, conveyed with vibrant colors and balanced compositions; illustrative details allow for associations with our everyday lives.
Interest and inspiration for the upcoming show and her future work stem from the question: What makes places, so people come together and enjoy them, with the momentum of coincidence creating spaces for people to leave their “bubbles”? What she looks forward to most regarding the IBC show is interaction and the unforeseeable nature of events: “Spontaneous conversation and improvising is what makes the experience of painting a mural special,” she says.
